How long should I expect to wait for my results?

Where Are My Results? Understanding the Timeline

If you are wondering how long does a pet DNA test take or when will my Orivet results be ready, waiting is often the hardest part!

Most customers receive their full reports within 2 to 5 weeks after the sample arrives at our lab. Because we offer an extensive range of tests, your exact processing time will vary depending on the test you ordered and your location.

The 4 Stages of Your Sample’s Journey

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of our testing timeline:

  1. Arrival & Check-In (Days 1–5): We scan your barcode and confirm arrival. Your order status will change to "Received."

    • Important: We cannot begin testing until you activate your kit online. Please register your barcode!

  2. Lab Processing (Days 5–15): We extract the DNA from your sample. Your status will show as "In Progress."

    • Note: Semen samples require special processing and can add up to 14 days to this stage.

  3. Analysis & Final Review (Days 16–28): We analyze the DNA against your specific test panels. If your status says "Data Analysis (0 days left)," we are in the final stage. Your results should appear within 48 hours.

  4. Results Released: We release your results as soon as they are ready! If you ordered multiple tests, you might get them in stages. We prioritize key tests needed for litter registrations.

Global Testing: Why Some Samples Travel Further

Use this table to estimate your wait time based on your test type

Test Type Estimated Processing Time (After Arrival)
Standard Breed / Health Swabs 2 – 4 Weeks
Semen Samples 2 – 5 Weeks
Genopet® / My Cat Scan™ 3 – 5 Weeks (Especially for international orders)
Parentage Reports 24 – 48 Hours (If DNA profiles are already on file)

Orivet is a global leader in pet genetics, with primary testing facilities in both Australia (Melbourne) and the USA (Spokane, WA & Knoxville, TN). While we aim to process samples locally whenever possible, certain advanced tests require specialized technology available only at our USA facility.

Why Is My Order Taking Longer?

If you are asking why is my DNA test delayed, several factors can affect your timeline:

  • Specialized USA Testing: Certain advanced tests, including Genopet®, Genopet+®, and My Cat Scan™, are processed exclusively at our USA facility.

  • International Shipping: If you send a sample for the tests above from outside the USA (e.g., Australia, Europe, or New Zealand), we use premium couriers like DHL or FedEx. However, international transit and customs clearance can add 1 to 2 extra weeks to your total turnaround time.

  • The "Receipt" Email: The 2 to 5-week processing window only begins after your sample is scanned at the final testing facility, not when you mail it.

  • Multiple Platforms: Different tests run on different schedules. If you ordered a "mixed" kit (e.g., a standard Breed Profile plus a Genopet® test), your standard results from your local lab may arrive first, while your USA-based results remain "Pending."

When Should I Contact Support?

If Charlie the Boston Terrier ran our lab, he’d promise your results “tomorrow” and then take a nap on the printer! Since we stick to the facts, we ask that you only contact our support team if:

  • Your status has been "Data Analysis (0 days left)" for more than 48 hours.

  • It has been more than 5 weeks since you received the email stating your sample arrived at the lab.

Tests Processed in the USA

If you have ordered any of the following, your sample will be processed at our USA laboratory:

  • Genopet® / Genopet+® (Ancestry & Health)

  • My Cat Scan™ (Comprehensive Feline Screen)

  • Canine HealthCheck®

What This Means for International Customers

If you are sending your sample from outside the United States (e.g., from Australia, Europe, or New Zealand) for the tests listed above, please keep the following in mind:

  • Fast-Tracked Transit: We use premium couriers like DHL or FedEx to move samples internationally. This typically adds 3–5 business days to the initial transit time.

  • Extended Timeline: Due to international shipping, customs clearance, and intake queues, the total turnaround time for these specific tests is usually closer to 5 weeks.

  • The "Receipt" Email: You will receive an email once the sample arrives at the final testing facility. The 2–5 week processing window begins only after this scan occurs.

Our International Shipping Process

To ensure your pet's DNA remains stable during its journey across the globe:

  1. Preparation: Once you mail your sample to your local collection point, it is batched with others for secure international transport.

  2. Customs: We handle all necessary permits and customs declarations to ensure a smooth entry into the USA.

  3. Delivery: Samples are delivered directly to our specialized lab team for immediate extraction.

Note: If you ordered a "mixed" kit (e.g., a standard Breed Profile plus a Genopet® test), you may receive your standard results first from your local lab, while the USA-based results remain "Pending" for an additional 1–2 weeks.
